HUMPING TRAILERS: The Fairest of Them All

One of these is definitely fairer than the other...

Bet you didn’t expect to see another post so soon, did you? Well, welcome to the beginning of the new features. Humping Trailers is a pun… I’ll wait to see if you get it. Okay, here’s a hint, they’ll be posted on Wednesdays. Get it yet? No. Well, nevermind then…

So, there’s this amazing thing Hollywood does, sometimes. They’ll release two movies that focus on similar subjects around the same time, causing people to have to choose which is their favorites, and usually one is pretty great, while the other sucks balls. (That’s not a pun.) Some examples? DANTE’S PEAK vs. VOLCANO (the latter for me); ARMAGEDDON vs. DEEP IMPACT (gotta go with Armageddon on this one); THE ILLUSIONIST (2006) vs. THE PRESTIGE (not even a contest for me…Prestige).

Anyway, they’ve done it again, focussing on the story of Snow White. There was a lot of hubbub when these trailers first came out (yeah, you’ll notice some of these first articles are catching up on the past few months), that one of these trailers was awesome and the other was MIRROR, MIRROR. I have to admit that while Mirror’s trailer is a far cry from the quality of SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN – they’re seemingly far different movies.

This movie is Directed by Tarsem Singh (IMMORTALS, which is out now and I don’t think anyone recommends seeing it), stars Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer (THE SOCIAL NETWORK), Nathan Lane, and Lily Collins as Snow White – who I have not seen in anything.

I actually think the movie looks pretty fun. A little THE PRINCESS BRIDE (definitely not that good though) and some self-referentialness, like SHREK. I’m actually looking forward to seeing more about it — which is a far cry from saying I want to actually see it. The really interesting thing about this movie, though, is how much it doesn’t look like a movie by Tarsem — who brought us the visual escapades of THE CELL, THE FALL, and again Immortals.

The interesting thing about Snow White & The Huntsman, on the other hand, is that it absolutely looks like it was.

SWATH as it’s being shortened to is directed by Ruper Sanders – in his first feature position as director. It stars Charlize Theron, Kirsten Stewart, Chris Hemsworth (THOR), and Ian McShane.

This LOOKS like the far superior movie. Not to even mention that it’s written by Hossein Amini (DRIVE), as compared to Mirror, which is Melissa Wallack’s first produced feature. Not that either is a guarantee of quality. I’m getting a strong Angelina Jolie in BEOWULF vibe from Charlize here… Which means, I’ll definitely be in line for this one.

What do you think of these two trailers? The movies? The Prestige? (You better love it!)
